Balo Is a Lifetime of Community

Shrawan, Nikhil, Sachin, and Sumit started with Balo as 5 year old kids when they won the Balo founder, Betta’s, heart. Our Balo teacher would pick them up from the streets in the afternoon for Kindergarten tutoring. They grew with the school, and when they were ready for third grade, Balo didn’t have the space to continue their studies, so we paid for their education in a rigorous private institute. In the next few years, Balo expanded, purchased our current building and grew into a school serving 350 students from preschool through 12th grade.

These fabulous gentlemen were then educated at Balo English Medium School for the remainder of their studies until they graduated. Shrawan, Nikhil, Sachin, and Sumit are now university students who still live in the Balo neighborhood. They visit the school multiple times a week and are devoted participants with smiles on their faces. Balo is part of their identity.

Several of our Balo graduates, including Shrawan, Nikhil, Sachin, and Sumit work at Decathlon Sporting Good store in Kolkata. They attended a three month training program and passed an exam to earn this opportunity. The money they earn covers their university fees and helps their families overcome poverty.

Our Balo community is so grateful for your support. We couldn’t do this work and transform lives without you.

Together with our sister organizations, Balo Italia, Ireland, and Malaysia,
we raise funds to meet the needs of our students and young women. In 2022 Balo USA raised $61,000 to support the $220,000 annual operating costs.
